Chi Nei Tsang®  III – Healing Harmony

Tok Sen is an ancient Thai massage technique used to enhance the flow of energy and to activate the body’s natural restorative and healing capacity.

In Thai, Tok Sen refers to releasing energetic pathways or removing energetic blockages in the body. It is a healing and unique bodywork method that continues to be practised in its traditional form in rural Thailand and in Buddhist temples, where it supports energy flow and relieves pain. Tok Sen works through mechanical and sound vibrations that penetrate deeply through the myofascial layers into the muscles.

This unique technique was developed in Lanna (the region of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand) more than 5,000 years ago, during the same period when the Chinese developed acupuncture.

Master Mantak Chia, the founder of the Universal Healing Tao, integrated Tok Sen into the Chi Nei Tsang Healing Harmony curriculum. In this way, the technique gained entirely new dimensions, as it is also applied to the abdomen, the “second brain” in Taoist understanding.

Tok Sen is a therapeutic body treatment in which we use a wooden hammer and variously shaped wooden chisels. With gentle, rhythmic tapping along the energetic pathways (Sen), we create vibrations that travel through the tissues, releasing the flow of energy. The rhythm of tapping with the wooden tools is essential, as rhythm supports the relaxation of the whole body. The most common rhythm consists of three taps: one, two, three — and again, one, two, three.

Different wooden chisels are used on other parts of the body. They substitute the therapist’s fingers, which can quickly become tired or sore when working on deeper blockages. The chisels are highly practical and adaptable, enabling access to areas that would otherwise be difficult to reach.

During a Tok Sen session, we maintain continuous contact with the body — touching it with our hand and fingers to feel changes and to determine where additional mechanical and sound vibrations are needed. Communication and the client’s feedback are equally important.

Just as in traditional Thai massage or in Chi Nei Tsang abdominal self-massage, specific Tok Sen techniques can also be practised as self-massage. For areas that cannot be reached, a therapist’s assistance is required.

Tok Sen is a simple technique that does not require special prior knowledge (although familiarity with Chi Nei Tsang is helpful) and can be easily combined with other massage modalities.

BENEFITS OF TOK SEN

Some of the key benefits of this ancient Thai–Chinese healing method include improved blood circulation, release of tight fascia, tendons and tense muscles, as well as enhanced nerve function. Tok Sen is particularly effective for tendons, which become stiff with ageing or prolonged sitting in fixed positions. For this reason, the technique is increasingly essential in rejuvenation programs and is offered in regeneration and anti-ageing centres across Asia and Europe.

An old saying states: “Young tendons — a young, flexible and healthy body.”

When the tendons are elastic, the natural alignment of the bones is maintained, the muscles relax, and they no longer compress blood vessels, nerves, lymphatic pathways, and meridians. This ensures that all parts of the body are well nourished and able to function optimally. A full-body Tok Sen treatment is one of the most effective methods of maintaining overall health — a fact confirmed through thousands of years of continuous use. Considering that tendons are heavily strained in daily life, their health is of essential importance. When we treat the tendons around the joints with Tok Sen, we also harmonise the tendons of the internal organs, thereby supporting the entire body

This therapy has a positive influence on virtually every part of the body and on its overall functioning:

  1. Improves blood circulation.
  2. (Better circulation nourishes the body and releases blocked energy more quickly.)
  3. Relaxes muscles.
  4. (Tense muscles compress the capillaries.)
  5. Stimulates the flow of energy in the peripheral nervous system.
  6. (These nerves run parallel to the capillaries. With each tap of the hammer, the vibrations strengthen both the veins and peripheral nerves, which further relaxes the muscles.)
  7. Relieves pain arising from various causes, such as:
  • Headache, migraines
  • Shoulder pain, tension in shoulder tendons, limited range of motion (“frozen shoulder”)
  • Pain due to shortened tendons, back muscle tension, scapular issues, and back pain
  • Lower back pain, difficulty bending
  • Lumbosacral pain, sciatic nerve compression
  • Thigh pain (hamstring strain)
  • Calf pain, foot pain, numbness
  • Pain in the arms, elbows, and numbness in the upper or lower arms and hands
  • And is an overall release of the whole body, enabling self-healing to begin…

During the workshop, we will also explore the basics of Chi Nei Tsang and practice complementary massage techniques, including cupping, gua sha, and warm herbal compress massage.

The workshop is intended for beginners and anyone wishing to refresh their knowledge. Participants who are collecting case studies will also have the opportunity to complete an examination.

After completing the Tok Sen workshop, you will receive a Universal Healing Tao Certificate of Attendance from the school of Master Mantak Chia.
